Erik IX, King of Sweden, was martyred on this day in 1160. Despite a complicated history, his reign was one that encouraged the spread of Christianity in Sweden. Erik is the patron saint of that country.
St. Matthias became an apostle, one of the twelve, through prayer and trust - the eleven cast lots to determine would replace Judas, Matthias or Justus. After his brief appearance in the biblical book of Acts, there are no more stories of Matthias. Perhaps he went to Ethiopia or to Eastern Europe. Perhaps he never made it out of Jerusalem and was martyred there. He is remember not for what he did, but for how much he was like any of us - faithfully following Jesus in the best ways he could. Today is his feast day.
